Uncovering. Revealing. Exploring the shadows. Reflecting on hidden issues with an eye toward greater enlightenment and transformation. These are the themes for October as we attend to life areas we may have preferred to leave in the dark. This is the month to look within: to ask questions of ourselves, our motives, our feelings and behavior, in order to better understand what really makes us tick. Until we come to truly know ourselves, we’ll never be able to realize all that we can achieve!
Cultivating our inner light, or encouraging self discovery, starts with greater reflection on who we are, what we stand for and what we want to create for our future. Focusing on peace, positivity, equality, love and kindness enables us to move forward in our lives, rather than getting bogged down in negativity. This is a fortunate month for gaining deeper insights into our personal and global concerns while unmaking our emotional blockages, fears, worries and doubts.
Accentuated by the Sun going into Scorpio, two Full Moons, Mercury going Retrograde, Mars continuing its backward cycle and Pluto finally going ‘Direct’, we can unearth our subconscious, grow our inner light and get answers to much needed questions.

* 2 October (1st in U.S.A): Full Moon in Aries — Courageous Action! This strongly charged Lunar phase, in the first of the Fire signs, illuminates our need for greater independence, liberation and positive change! An Aries Full Moon magnifies our self identity, so our need for assertive energy and emotional freedom is turbo charged. We are encouraged now to push past boundaries, both inner and outer, to better discover our true dynamic selves and find greater confidence in all that we do. Take advantage of this opportunity to feel more personal power, breaking free of any self doubt or fear in order for your true self to emerge! This is a time of culmination, where we can summon greater courageous action going forward!
* 3 October (2nd in U.S.A): Venus goes into Virgo — Realistic Love! The planet ruling love, affection and enjoyment now shifts from an overt Leo vibe into the more reserved, practical and pragmatic Virgo energy. This marks a new down-to-earth cycle when we’re more mindful of the details, nuances and specific issues regarding our lives and interactions with others. Our relationships will need to make more sense, be more serviceable and have a purposeful, realistic place in our lives. This is not the time for seeking perfection — that only leads to nitpicking and critical thought. Instead, keep your mind open and see all possibilities and potentials in life. * 5 October (4th in U.S.A): Pluto in Capricorn goes Direct — Advancing Positive Change! As the planet of Transformation now goes Direct, continuing its movement through the sober sign of Capricorn, we get serious about making making further positive changes to ourselves and our world. The overall theme of this cycle is coming to terms with karma, uncovering the misuse of power, transforming issues of authority — all of which can enable change for the better. This represents a major time of discovery, insight and revolution that brings transformation to our society, government, world order and Mother Earth. It also pushes us to think about the changes we want to make to our belief structures and our power as individuals and as citizens of the world. This pairing of Pluto in Capricorn will continue until 24 March 2023.
* 14 October (13th in U.S.A): Mercury in Scorpio goes Retrograde — Dig a Little Deeper! As the planet ruling communication and interactions starts to move backward, we are urged for the next 3 weeks to re-address the hidden issues of our lives. Although not a good time to embark on new projects, plans or procedures, this is an advantageous period for research, review, reworking and reconsidering the deeper concerns of our world in order to bring to light hidden or secret issues. In the sign of Scorpio, this is a time of uncovering, analyzing and transforming ways of thinking, feeling and intuitive awareness. Information revealed at this time can help to solve problems, with greater understanding of the motivation of others. Use this energy to uncover truer knowledge of who you are, then implement your new awareness when Mercury goes Direct on 4 November. We are now given a clearer understanding of how others see us versus how we see ourselves. Start believing in the power of YOU now by cultivating more self love — which in turn results in happier and healthier partnerships. * 28 October (27th in U.S.A): Mercury Retrogrades into Libra — Balanced Expectations! A big part of keeping greater balance in our lives is not expecting total happiness or total calamity at every turn. As the planet of Communications continues its backwards crawl into Libra, we are reminded to ditch the drama and try to keep objective! This is a time to consider moderation in all that we do as this will help us cultivate greater emotional, mental and physical peace. Combined with an optimistic outlook we are urged to seek out the best but accept that things may not always work out as planned. It is important now to keep level-headed in our thinking and balanced with our feelings as we take extra care in our interactions. Relationship issues can be highlighted now as we are urged to seek harmony with those in our lives and with ourselves as well.
* 28 October: (27th in U.S.A): Venus goes into Libra — Appreciate, Cultivate, Initiate! Beauty, the beckoning of love, enjoyment and creativity are brought forth with this new Venusian phase. As the ‘Goddess of Love’ planet goes into harmonious and creative Libra, the focus will be on our attachments, affections, artistry and aphrodisiac feelings! This is a time urging us to appreciate more of the joys in life as well as cultivate and initiate new feelings of affection and tenderness! We find we’re more given to kindness, fair-mindedness and an eagerness to make our relationships work. We have luck on our side now for connecting with others, manifesting new relationships and finding more beauty (and balance) in our lives. This earthy energy gives us the opportunity to appreciate even more of the “joy factor” in all that we do! Use this occasion to honour those things that you value while releasing what is no longer pleasing. As with all Full Moons, this is a magnified time of culmination. You are encouraged now to grow greater artistry, love and beauty in your life by nurturing your gifted soul. This is the time to create a stronger foundation in personal and professional dealing by letting go of what is no longer valued or supportive!
* The Outer Planets stay in a sign for a longer period of time, so their effect on us is more gradual, but significant none the less. Here they are in their current positions:
* Mars in Aries Retrograde: The planet ruling energy, action and combativeness in its own sign of assertive Aires brings an extremely dynamic period — especially as it continues its “backward” movement until 13 November, 2020. The last time this Mars Retrograde occurred in Aries was 1988 — but this time it will be even more powerful as it makes challenging connections with Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn. As this Retrograde Mars in Aries continues though the U.S. presidential elections, we can expect a combative and divisive time, with angry and reactive feelings going back and forth and potential for the abuse of power. Strong confrontational and combative emotions are highlighted — not only with world events but in our own personal lives. This is a time to be cautious, to think before replying, not to take things too personally or overreact to situations. On the upside, during this Retrograde occurrence we may have greater focus, determination, drive and endurance regarding our personal goals and passions. Use this time to rework or revise life endeavours while finding greater inner power, self-awareness and personal strength. Mars will be Retrograde in Aries until 13–14 November and remain in Aries until 7 January 2021.
* Jupiter is in Capricorn: As Jupiter continues to move through the serious sign of Capricorn, we let go of the fantasies and delusions and get real with our dreams and desires. This is the of the true Reality Check! For the time ahead we will be more focused on results, factual truths, the reality of situations and down-to-earth practicality. This is a cycle of responsibility, duty and improved morality — especially regarding those in power. As Capricorn is an Earth sign, we’ll be focusing on better ways to organize our lives while embracing greater security, stability and structure. We will now be concentrating on steady growth, working on long term goals and improving the rules we live by. Because we’ll be more hard working, dedicated and serious, we’ll have a better chance of success, progress and material well-being. This is also a great occasion for personal improvement and embarking on important and substantial new methods of individual growth, learning and development. Rewards come to those who put in the efforts that merit achievements — and to those who show thoughtful concern, patience and perseverance in their undertakings. Saturn is a teacher — helping us to grow through past mistakes, failures and hardships. By using the knowledge that we gain from these experiences, we can acquire greater wisdom, self awareness, patience and finally, advancement. Saturn in Capricorn focuses on righting the wrongs around us, ushering in a new era of ethical concerns and rewarding sincerity, integrity and authenticity. This can be the time when your hard work, efforts and dreams finally pay off! Saturn will be in the sign of Capricorn until n 18 January 2021. Saturn will be in Capricorn until 17 December, where it will advance into the humanitarian sign of Aquarius, remaining there until 7 March 2023.
* Uranus in Taurus is Retrograde: The planet signifying change, revolution and innovation is in the sign of Taurus which represents its opposite — stability, assurance and safeguarding! For the next 7 years this Uranus/Taurus pairing highlights liberation from the customary way of doing things in favor of new methods and inventive techniques. Also, as Taurus rules our personal values, creativity, material goods, finances, food and general enjoyment, we will see new innovations in these areas. Uranus will seek to shift the security-conscious/money-minded principles of the Bull by remodeling the way we handle our resources, material wealth and investment interests. We can expect a new wave of economic innovation helping us to focus on being more authentic and practical in our approach to things. As Uranus continues its 5 month Retrograde cycle, we’ll experience further shifting themes of how we view stability. More change will certainly be a feature in our future, so expect change, revolution and acts of defiance. Be ready to adapt rather than fighting to hang onto the old ways of being! * Neptune in Pisces is Retrograde: The planet ruling dreams and creativity continues its transit through its ruling sign of Pisces, encouraging us to honour more of our spiritual awareness, artistic inspiration and intuitive insight! Greater appreciation for the beauty around us as well as within us is also emphasized. We are urged to feel and express greater “we-are-all-one” compassion toward ourselves and others — along with further sympathetic understanding and involvement with humanitarian endeavours. Greater focus on our faith, spirituality and need for understanding of one another is highlighted! As Neptune goes Retrograde, we will be urged to readdress all the above issues and re-evaluate how we plan to manifest our future hopes and dreams. Greater focus on our faith, spirituality and need for global understanding is highlighted! Neptune will be in Pisces until 31 March 2025 and Retrograding until 29 November 2020.
* Pluto is in Capricorn: As the planet of Transformation continues its travels through the sober sign of Capricorn, we reexamine serious issues and concerns regarding the positive changes we would like to make to ourselves and our world. The overall theme of this cycle is uncovering the misuse of power and authority to enable change for the better. It represents a major time of rediscovery, review and reconsideration that brings transformation to our society, government, world order and Mother Earth. It also pushes us to think about the changes we want to make to our belief structures and our power as individuals and as citizens of the world. Pluto will continue to be in Capricorn until 24 March 2023.
* Chiron is in Aries Retrograde: As the minor planet/comet Chiron, connected to the archetype of the “wounded healer” moves through the independent, assertive and aggressive fire sign of Aries, our identities are highlighted. During this time we’ll have greater opportunity to overcome personal obstacles, discover new strength, manifest healing and further self confidence. Chiron is said to act as a link between the conscious and unconscious and as such, can represent transformation in body, mind and soul. As we surmount challenges, we find greater empowerment, advancing our unique spirits while manifesting more of our dreams. Chiron will be in Aries until 2027.
